about

- Recorded at the abandoned psychiatric hospital in Volterra, Italy, Ferri pavilion.

- Coordinates: 43.40013, 10.87569

- The recording took place last January in one of the abandoned pavilions of the ex mental hospital in Volterra, Tuscany. Ferri is a huge building surrounded by a garden that in winter is often covered in snow. I sat down at one of the old tables made of stone in the courtyard, listening to the ice crackling and the drippings from the rooftop.

There was no silence at all, even if it was a forsaken place.
Soft frozen wind, drops, creaks and a sudden strong gust of stormy breeze were communicating in a language unknown to humans, giving the feeling of an entire environment inhabited by elements of nature or maybe ghosts.

The recording is pure. No overdubbing and no effects were used.
I played it back in my home studio directly from my device to another, re-recording the track using an analog mixer just as a vehicle, pushing on frequencies in real-time to reveal every hidden voice involved.

There’s only one moment where I added few carillon notes, for a bunch of seconds, when the wind pushed hard on microphones distorting the sound, as a gentle answer to that angry presence that maybe was yelling me to go away.

‘NOF4’ is the moniker of Fernando Nannetti, a painter who spent most of his life in this sanatorium, certain to be able to communicate with aliens through an unknown language that he used to engrave on the outside walls of Ferri pavilion.

- Recorded with a Zoom H4 / mixed with Soundcraft Spirit Folio.

- Records and compositions by Nàresh Ran.
